For many, hearing the word “cancer” stops everything. It's a diagnosis that brings fear, uncertainty—and a flood of questions. One of the biggest concerns? How will I afford treatment?
If you or a loved one is navigating cancer and you're on Medicare—or approaching eligibility—understanding what’s covered, what’s not, and what options exist can make a world of difference. At BoomerCare Health Solutions, we help people turn confusion into clarity during some of life’s toughest moments.
What Does Medicare Cover for Cancer Treatment?
Medicare does provide comprehensive cancer coverage, but it's spread across different parts of the program:
Part A (Hospital Insurance)
- Covers inpatient hospital stays for surgery, chemo, radiation, or complications
- Skilled nursing care following hospitalization (if medically necessary)
Part B (Medical Insurance)
- Covers doctor visits, outpatient chemotherapy, radiation, and imaging
- Durable medical equipment (DME) like wheelchairs or oxygen if prescribed
- Medications given in a doctor’s office (e.g., some injectables)
Important: Part B usually covers outpatient chemotherapy and radiation therapy. But coinsurance can be 20%, which adds up fast.
What About Cancer Medications?
Part D (Prescription Drug Plans) or Medicare Advantage with Rx:
- Covers most oral chemotherapy drugs and anti-nausea meds
- Formulary restrictions, tiers, and prior authorizations may apply
- Be aware of the donut hole or coverage gap
Medigap Plans Can Help with Out-of-Pocket Costs
A Medigap (Supplement) plan can dramatically reduce out-of-pocket expenses, especially those 20% Part B coinsurance bills. Plans like Plan G or Plan N are popular among those concerned about major health events like cancer.
Medicare Advantage Plans: What to Watch For
Many Medicare Advantage plans offer:
- Cancer screenings
- Care coordination
- Out-of-pocket maximums (which can be helpful)
However, network limitations and preauthorization requirements may delay or complicate access to specialists and certain treatments.
Are There Other Options for Cancer Coverage?
Yes — many of our clients also choose to add a Cancer Insurance Policy that pays a lump sum upon diagnosis. These funds can be used however you need — for treatment, travel, bills, or even time off work for a loved one.
